Handmade Holidays - Modern Stenciled Breadcloths

A favorite holiday tradition in our family is crafting freshly baked breads. A warm loaf tucked in brown paper and wrapped in a linen cloth makes a simple yet thoughtful gift.

But when I want my gift to be just a bit more meaningful, a stencilled breadcloth is the perfect way to take that simple gift to the next level.

fresh bread as gifts

Breadcloths are basically tea towels used to keep bread warm and fresh. Once your delicious bread has been shared, these cloths continue to pull their weight as functional members of the kitchen. So by using bright bold colors and fun patterns, stencilling will give a them fresh modern look that will be enjoyed throughout the year.

Stencilling breadcloths is a fun + easy project. You can replicate the look I've created here, or use your own personalized designs. Either way, all you need are a few supplies.

For mine, I used the following:
royal designs herringbone stencil

To start, wash and dry your linens making sure not to use any type of fabric softener in the process. Once your cloths have been prepped, position each stencil in your chosen pattern and securely tape down making sure the stencil lays flat against the cloth.

Stencilling is an easy process. Begin by lightly loading your stencil brush with paint then gently blotting off any excess onto a paper towel. Using the lightest amount of paint  prevents paint from bleeding under the stencil. Acrylic paints work very well; however, I especially like the Royal Designs stencil creme for its creamy consistency and beautiful metallic sheen. It does a fantastic job of keeping the paint in place and covers amazingly well. It's definitely a product I'll continue to keep in my craft arsenal.

As you begin the stencilling process, apply your paint with a light pouncing motion until you get the desired coverage. When you've completed one section, gently remove your stencil in an upward motion to prevent smudging. When applied properly, the paint is dry to the touch almost immediately, but do use caution as you're moving your stencils from one location to another.

And using bright bold colors keeps it fresh.

The arrows on this piece were created using the herringbone stencil for the fletching and a black paint pen for the shaft. A gold sunburst was handpainted in the center.

So easy, and they look amazing! These breadcloths are deceptively simple to make when using stencils to create the designs. And by using bright bold colors mixed with metallics, they have a fun modern look that makes them worthy of using every day.

There's nothing better than being gifted with a warm loaf of freshly baked bread just out of the oven. It's a gift that speaks from the heart. Wrapping your gift in a hand-stencilled breadcloth makes it even more meaningful and is a gift that will be appreciated all throughout the year.
